It is one of the most famous dresses in the world, and yet, I can't find much about the original online. Is it privately owned? Was it auctioned as part of her estate sale? Do the Holywood Studios still own it? Is it lost? I hear there are several copies of the dress floating around, but I am interested in the whereabouts of the original.

I have no idea, but a lot of famous outfits are on display at the Smithsonian.

Details are sketchy, but it appears as if the original is owned by actress Debbie Reynolds. After Reynolds bought the dress other people have tried to auction off replicas or fakes, and it is always referenced that Debbie has the original dress (and many others) in her private collection.
