The Wonder of Having a Baby by Tom Jones
'Up the duff', 'knocked up' or 'bun in the oven'. It doesn't matter how it is said, it all means the same thing. You are going to have a baby. While most people think that having a baby simply refers to the delivery of the little bundle of joy, the term refers to a whole series of steps and decisions that need to be considered along the way. Starting from the moment you think about having one to after the labour, while the following is not exhaustive, here are some things that you need to think about along the way.
Having a baby does change your lifestyle to some extent. It will be different for different people, but generally the little one becomes the centre of focus. Gone are the nightclub sessions, spending money like it is going out of fashion and last-minute decisions to travel to Paris for Valentine's Day. Instead they are replaced with hugs and kisses from happy faces that never hesitate to give you giggles, handbags full of nappies and dummies and late night get-ups to feed, burp or re-settle. Shopping for a forgotten ingredient takes an hour instead of five, well-loved sports cars are replaced by family station wagons, and the spare room, which used to house the home theatre, is now a cute nursery decorated with jungle animals or fairies. It is a change that some may never be ready for - but when it happens is certainly worth it.
Before you even try to start having a baby, once you have acknowledged the sacrifices you have to make, the mother and father must ensure that their health is up to par. The ladies will have to make sure that pap smears, breast and sexually transmitted infection checks are up to date, antibodies for rubella and mandatory hormones are at the right levels and folate and iodine quantities are boosted by taking supplements. Fathers should get a rubella, sexually transmitted infection and sperm check along with a full medical. The doctor's visit should also include any other medical worries that either party has, and safe medications to take while pregnant.
While pregnant, the decisions that you make about yourself still revolve around the wonder that is growing inside you. As the mother is the provider of energy and nourishment, anything that she ingests will eventually make its way to the baby via the umbilical cord. Hence alcohol is replaced by litres of water, and high-risk foods such as processed meats, soft serve ice cream and yoghurt, sushi, pre-mixed or unwashed salads, raw eggs, soft cheeses and pates, uncooked or rare meat and unpasteurised milk become substituted with safer options. This reduces the risk of listeriosis, a type of food poisoning that can harm unborn babies. Smoking and illegal drugs should be stopped and coffee limited. While it is hard during the first trimester (due to decreased energy levels), regular, safe exercise should be carried out throughout each stage of pregnancy.
Other decisions that need to be made with respect to having a baby include: type of delivery, type of hospital, breast or bottle-feeding, stay at home or working mum and pain relief options. This stage of your life is the start of many more important choices that you have to make as you happily watch your love one grow and blossom.
